Posted on April 23rd, 2012 David Brooks No comments

Days ago, I just wrote a post talking about 5 Android tablet alternatives for Apple iPad, which provides specific information about the 5 Android devices. Today, I would like to share another 5 devices with all of you guys, and this time top 5 mostly recommended Android smartphones that could be used as substitutes for Apple iPhone, like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S II, Motorola Droid Razr MAXX, etc. These Android smartphones would also produce excellent experience for you for website surfing, communicating, game playing, video viewing, etc. With these excellent Android smartphones, you can now no longer narrow down your choices on Apple iPhones, but also various successful and wonderful Android smartphones. Well, less nonsense, let’s straightly go to the topic.

    Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Galaxy NexusThe Samsung Galaxy Nexus is arguably the most capable Android-based smartphone in the market right now. It comes with a 4.5 inches Super AMOLED Plus display at 1280-by-720-pixel resolution, which produces excellent experience for you to read messages, surf the internet, view pictures, play games and watch HD movies on Galaxy Nexus. What’s more, it configures with the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operation system, which adds scores of this phone greatly.

    Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S lllThe Galaxy S III is still not released yet, but not far away. Rumored to be released in May, this new smartphone has been confirmed with a quadcore 1.4GHz processor and a 4.6-inch screen running at 1280 x 720, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash, an NFC-equipped 2,050 mAh battery and 16GB of internal storage.

    Motorola Droid Razr MAXX

Motorola Droid Razr MAXXThere was a time when Motorola stood atop the mobile space with its Razr. And although it lost that position to Research In Motion and then Apple over the years, the company has made a strong resurgence with the Droid Razr MAXX. That offering comes with 4G LTE, a beautifully thin design, and upgradability to Android 4.0. Best of all, it has a 4.3-inch display, which is much bigger than the iPhone’s 3.5-inch option.

    LG Nitro HD

LG Nitro HDThe LG Nitro HD sports a really nice 4.5-inch display with 720p resolution. Underneath its hood hums a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, and the 8-megapixel camera on its back can capture video at 1080p. Also, it is one of the few Android smartphones on AT&T’s lineup that can ride on the carrier’s 4G LTE network. In terms of software, the LG Nitro HD may come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box, but we expect to see an update to Ice Cream Sandwich at some point in the future.

    Samsung Galaxy Note

Samsung Galaxy NoteThe Samsung Galaxy Note is well-built, its Android interface is stellar and the inclusion of a stylus is making many customers happy. It comes with a 5.3″ SuperAMOLED HD screen with 1280×800 pixels producing a PPI of 285 which is quite stunning considering the screen’s size. Behind the hood are an 8mp camera, a 1.4 Ghz Dual Core processor, the ability to record in 1080p and 1GB RAM, so this is definitely one of the leading phones in the market specifications-wise.

  • Upgraded Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 leaked on CDMA Galaxy Nexus

Posted on February 6th, 2012 David Brooks No comments

Although Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 has been released for a long time, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus still operates on the 4.0.2 OS version. Compared with the 4.0.3 version, the older version shows disadvantages not only in the stupid and dull device interface, but also in the bugs aroused at times. However, now, there is finally good news for Galaxy Nexus users. According to the resource from an XDA senior member, they have released the 4.0.4 version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS for Verizon Galaxy Nexus users. Users on several forums are saying they’ve received prompts to download and install new updates that crank the version number up to 4.0.4. This new version appears to include new radios, so hopefully reception will improve. We’re also hearing that it includes a fix for the Android OS bug that has been keeping the device awake for now good reason.

    Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4

    New features leaked include:
    -faster processing performance
-Android operating system vulnerabilities (battery problems) fix
    -3 G / 4 G switching improvement
    -signal strength enhanced
-new Power menu (different from 4.0.2, close to 4.0.3)
    -faster phone start
-automatic brightness adjustment function improved. A more smooth transition
    – adjust the camera Holding down button
-multi-touch problems solutions (this is not sure for developers)
    -automatically rotating more quickly
    -the browser’s performance significantly enhanced
-open recent application list more quickly
    – the changes of camera UI
    -volume increased
    -the keyboard problem fixed
-update the UI of news and weather applications
-The Rapid Control improvement in browser

The upgraded version of Android ICS of course brings better phone experience for you, just like you can own better HD video experience by playing DVD movies on Galaxy Nexus or watching AVCHD videos on Nexus. But as this upgraded version is still not officially released yet, you have to be responsible yourself for what happens to your device when flashing any software, so be careful and backup before you do anything. If you’re feeling lucky and want to try out some software that, according to Google, doesn’t exist yet, you can download the file (659e0a8f24b4.signed-mysid-IMM30B-from-ICL53F.659e0a8f.zip) below:

Couple of notes from XDA senior member:
-You must be on 4.0.2 bootloader, radios, boot partition (kernel), and system or this will failed.
-You can use this in both stock and CWM recovery.
-You will lose root and will have to reroot afterwords using CWM!

  • Detailed instructions and video to tell you how to install Google Wallet on Galaxy Nexus

Posted on February 3rd, 2012 David Brooks No comments

The Galaxy Nexus for Verizon Wireless is the first handset to offer the Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” platform, giving you more flexibility to express yourself than ever before. Featuring the first HD Super AMOLED screen, the Galaxy Nexus delivers extreme color and clarity on a huge 4.65 inch touch screen for you to watch HD Blu-ray movies on Galaxy Nexus. 4G LTE network capabilities exhibit astounding speed and with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, the Galaxy Nexus is optimized for faster multitasking. However, with the access of Google Wallet on AT&T GSM Galaxy Nexus, the state of the deployment of Google Wallet for the LTE Variant on Verizon has made LTE Galaxy Nexus users quite irritated. And thanks to the Droid-Life writer Kellex, who has brought the detailed instructions and showed a video on how to install Google Wallet from Google Market on Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus.

Galaxy Nexus Google WalletGalaxy Nexus users needed to use a Google Wallet .apk, a risky and nonofficial Google app, to install Google Wallet on Galaxy Nexus last December, while AT&T Nexus users only need a AT&T SIM to use Wallet. Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus users could now install the app directly from the Android Market without flashing a zip or doing anything that a non-rooted phone could not do. Instructions showed bellow:

    1. From your phone, open the browser and head to http://market.android.com.
    2. Search for “Google Wallet.” (If your browser prompts you to open the Market, don’t. Just stay in the browser.)
    3. When the results come back, tap on the Google Wallet icon.
    4. The phone will prompt you to leave the browser and go to the Market. Choose the Market this time.
    5. You should now be sitting in the Android Market with Google Wallet up.
    6. Tap “install” and enjoy.

If that short method is not working, here is the full method:
Tip: You may want to clear data and defaults on browser and Market before doing this.
    1. From your phone open the browser and head to http://market.android.com.
    2. Search for “Google Wallet.” (If your browser prompts you to open the Market, don’t. Just stay in the browser.)
    3. When the results come back, tap on the Google Wallet icon.
    4. Tap the “Install” button from within the browser and then sign into your Google account. (Again, this is all from the browser, not the Market app.)
    5. Once you have signed in, you should be redirected back to the Market page in the browser.
    6. Obviously, you will not have the option to install there since the VZW Nexus is not supported.
    7. Tap the back button until you are prompted for the Market or Browser again, this time choosing the Market.
    8. The Android Market should open to the Google Wallet page with an option to install.

Verizon Nexus Google WalletNote: It’s definitely working for most that have an unlocked bootloader and are rooted. As far as the completely stock, unrooted, with a locked bootloader crowd, it’s tough to tell.

To understand the whole installation easier, you can check the following video to get the detailed operation on how to install Google Wallet on your Galaxy Nexus:

  • Galaxy Nexus vs. iPhone 4S vs. Droid RAZR – Which one meets you most

Posted on October 25th, 2011 David Brooks No comments

After the release of Apple iPhone 4S, users have been more or less disappointed as it should be the iPhone 5 in their guess. Many smart phone companies might think this would be a nice opportunity to compete with iPhone 4S for more market shall, with various full-featured smart mobile phones released in the following period of this year, like Google’s Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Droid RAZR. If you are still wandering on which smart phone to buy in the market among these three phones, you should take a careful look on the blog written by Daniel Ionescu, from PCWorld, who wrote a blog post on PCWorld about the comparison among the three popular smartphones: Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 4S and Droid RAZR. Read the following post to get the detailed information.

iPhone 4S vs. Galaxy Nexus vs. Droid RGoogle’s Galaxy Nexus is the latest addition to this year’s hot smartphone line-up, alongside the iPhone 4S and the Droid RAZR. Unveiled last night, the Galaxy Nexus, manufactured by Samsung, embodies Google’s idea of the perfect smartphone, together with the brand-new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile OS.

But does the Galaxy Nexus stand a chance against Apple’s iPhone 4S, which is currently selling like hot cakes, or the skinny Droid RAZR, also unveiled this week?

The first thing you’ll notice on the Galaxy Nexus is the huge, curved 4.65-inch display, which is larger than the 4.3-inch one found on the Droid RAZR, and considerably bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S. The Galaxy Nexus display doesn’t skimp on pixel density either; it has a 1280- by-720 pixel resolution, the highest in the comparison. The iPhone display however, still retains the highest pixel density at 330 ppi, a slight lead over the 316 ppi screen of the Galaxy Nexus.Galaxy Nexus

The Galaxy Nexus is also very thin, but not thinner than the Droid RAZR (8.84 mm on the Nexus compared to 7.1 mm on the RAZR), which makes the iPhone 4S look a bit bulky at 9.3 mm. The Droid RAZR is also the lightest smartphone out of the bunch at 127 grams, while the iPhone 4S is the most compact given its smaller screen size.

Inside, the Galaxy Nexus, the Droid RAZR and the iPhone 4S run on the latest dual-core processors, namely 1.2GHz dual-core on the Android side, and 1GHz dual-core on the iPhone 4S. The Android phones also run on 1GB of RAM, while the iPhone 4S features half that amount. As for storage, all three phones come with 16GB of built-in memory, so you have plenty of space for your apps and media. The Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S come in 32GB flavors, too, or even up to 64GB at the high end for the 4S, which doesn’t have a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage. The Droid RAZR also comes with a 16GB MicroSD card included, so the total of bundled storage is bumped to 32GB.

Galaxy Nexus Chart updateIn the multimedia department, you won’t run out of options with either of these phones. The Droid RAZR and the iPhone 4S have 8-megapixel cameras at the back that can record full HD 1080p video. The Galaxy Nexus can also record 1080p video, but, surprisingly, Samsung put only a 5-megapixel shooter on Google’s phone, which is less than what we have seen on other phones from the manufacturer, such as the Galaxy SII. All three phones also have video chat cameras on the front.

If you’re looking for extra tricks from your phone, the Galaxy Nexus might be what you’re looking for. Out of the three phones, the Nexus is the only device with Near Field Communication support, which allows you to make wireless payments (at a small, but growing list of retailers), as well as to beam contacts, websites, apps or maps to other NFC-enabled devices by just bringing the phones together and making them touch.
